Texas A&M baseball vs Tennessee score, updates, highlights: Aggies fall in national championship final (2024)

Austin CurtrightUSA TODAY NETWORK

scored too little, too late on Monday night.

The No. 3 Aggies fell to No. 1 Tennessee 6-5 on Monday night in Game 3 of the College World Series final, falling just short of their first-ever national championship in baseball.

REQUIRED READING:

Texas A&M found itself down 6-1 in the eighth inning but was able to push across two runs in each of its final two frames before falling a run short from potentially sending the win-or-go-home game to extra innings.

Despite starting pitcher Justin Lamkin lasting only 2 and 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, the Aggies were in a 3-1 game late, until typical lockdown closer Evan Aschenbeck entered the game. The Vols were able to get to the stopper of the year award winner and scored three runs off Aschenbeck on six hits, including a home run from Most Outstanding Player Dylan Dreiling, who hit a home run in each of the three CWS final games.

Overall, the Aggies struggled with runners in scoring position, notching 13 hits as a team but stranding nine runners on the night. With the win, Tennessee became the first team to win the national championship as the NCAA tournament No. 1 seed since Miami (Florida) did so in 1999.

9:28 p.m.: LaViolette can't catch up to the fastball up in the zone, as he strikes out in a full count. A&M down to final two outs now.

9:24 p.m.: Perfect start for Texas A&M, as Grahovac doubles down the left-field line to lead off the inning.

9:23 p.m.: Aggies now facing Tennessee pitcher Aaron Combs.

Bottom eighth inning: Tennessee 6, Texas A&M 3

9:20 p.m.: Stark gets caught with too big of a lead at second, and Appel fires a throw to second base and catches the Tennessee catcher in a rundown for the final out of the inning. Aggies head to the ninth with their last shot at tying this game up.

9:19 p.m.: Aschenbeck strikes out Moore for the second out of the inning.

9:16 p.m.: Aschenbeck allows a one-out single to Stark, who advances to second on the error by Sorrell. Sorrell bobbled the ball in the outfield.

9:12 p.m.: Connell strikes out Targac to end Texas A&M's chance. Two potentially game-changing strikeouts to end the eighth.

9:10 p.m.: That's a really rough at bat for Kent, who strikes out on three consecutive sliders for the second out of the inning.

9:08 p.m.: Camarillo grounds out to the shortstop deep in the hole and is able to beat out the throw to put runners on first and second with one out for the Aggies. Things are getting interesting in Omaha.

9:05 p.m.: Loy's night is done, as Kirby Connell enters for the Vols.

8:58 p.m.: Aggies finally add another run, as Schott singles up the middle to score Appel from third. A&M trailing 6-2 now.

8:56 p.m.: A pair of wild pitches has advanced Appel to second, and now third. Schott with a chance to score a run here on a ball in play.

8:54 p.m.: Left-hander Dylan Loy is relieving Nate Snead with Schott coming to the plate.

8:49 p.m.: Appel ropes a leadoff single up the middle. That's a good start.

Bottom 7th inning: Tennessee 6, Texas A&M 1

8:46 p.m.: Inning ends after Curley flies out to center field. Texas A&M needs a lot of offense with six outs to work with.

8:44 p.m.: Call is confirmed after review. Appel wasn't able to lay the tag.

8:42 p.m.: Aschenbeck getting uncharacteristically hit around, as Tears double to center field to score Ensley from first base. LaViolette's relay throw with Camarillo actually beat Ensley home, but Ensley makes an outstanding play to avoid the tag, barrel rolling into home plate for the Vols' sixth run.

8:41 p.m.: Ensley singles, putting another runner on for the Vols with two outs. Aggies aren't in a good spot.

8:39 p.m.: Amick hits a two-out single to right field.

8:36 p.m.: Aschenbeck gets two quick outs on a pair of fly outs from Moore and Burke. Burke nearly hit a home run, however, but Sorrell was able to haul it in near the wall.

8:27 p.m.: Targac draws a walk on a 3-1 count, putting runners on first and second. Big spot here for Grahovac.

8:24 p.m.: Kent singles to center field to give A&M a baserunner. Looks like the Aggies are going to try and capitalize here with Ryan Targac pinch hitting for Chestnut in the 9-hole.

8:22 p.m.: Camarillo strikes out to lead off the seventh inning. Texas A&M offense has been stifled up to this point.

Bottom 6th inning: Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1

7:58 p.m.: Appel singles to give Texas A&M a runner on first with one out.

7:57 p.m.: LaViolette leads off the sixth inning with a strike out. The Aggies need him to get going.

Bottom 5th inning: Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1

7:53 p.m.: Stewart gets out of the inning after Ensley flies out to right field. Stewart doing his job and giving the Aggies a chance here.

7:51 p.m.: Stewart allows a double to Dreiling after Amick pops up to the second baseman. That's a runner on second with two outs for the Vols.

Top 4th inning: Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1

7:28 p.m.: Camarillo grounds out to the second baseman to end the inning. He showed some frustration after the play, slamming his helmet to the ground just past first base.

7:26 p.m.: Burton steals second, putting an Aggies runner in scoring position with two outs. Camarillo up to the plate.

7:23 p.m.: Sorrell strikes out for the second out of the inning. Sechrist has been effective so far.

7:21 p.m.: Burton draws a walk to put a runner on first with one out.

7:18 p.m.: Schott grounds out to lead off the inning. Aggies are going to need some offense to compete in this one.

Bottom 3rd inning: Tennessee 3, Texas A&M 1

7:15 p.m.: Stewart allows a single to left field out the gates, resulting in another Vols run. However, Texas A&M gets out of the inning as Curley was thrown out at second base trying to extend a single into a double.

7:12 p.m.: Here comes Schlossnagle. Lamkin's night is done, and here comes Josh Stewart in relief. Aggies going to likely ask for a lot from Stewart.

7:10 p.m.: Ensley singles with the bases empty, giving Tennessee another baserunner with two outs. Tears then also singles, putting runners on first and second with no outs for the Vols. Lamkin having a really tough time so far.

7:06 p.m.: Amick grounds out to the shortstop, moving Burke to third base with one out.

7:05 p.m.: Burke leads off the inning with a double. Lamkin going to have to dig out of an early hole in the frame.

6:58 p.m.: Aggies getting going now, as LaViolette singles. Runners on first and second now with one out.

6:56 p.m.: Grahovac singles, scoring Chestnut. We're all tied up.

6:55 p.m.: Chestnut steals third with Grahovac up to bat with a chance to even this thing up.

6:53 p.m.: A&M making things happen with some small ball, as Chestnut lays down a bunt and would've been safe at first for a leadoff single anyway, but Amick's errant throw sails into the outfield and puts Chestnut on second base with one out. Chaos on the basepaths.

6:52 p.m.: Kent flies out to left field to start the inning.

6:40 p.m.: Sechrist strikes out Camarillo to end the inning.
