SUSPENSION EASY SETUP GUIDE
- Quote
Postby Motoboss »
I am not very familiar with suspension and what the adjustments do and I know im not the only one...So I thought we could all use a good diagram of where things are at on the bike. As you see here I made a rough guide that could use some help if anyone cares to do so it would be greatly apreciated. There are some adjustments I am not clear about
For example:
-Where is the sag adjustment? Do we not need to adjust that?
-Where do you adjust preload on the bike and what does it do exactly?
-How does adjusting the fork oil level effect the bike?
Basically if someone could explain each adjustment in more detail..What it does and how it effects the bike..
I uploaded the psd of the diagram if someone would like to expand on it or come up with there own but it needs to be easy to understand..I would also like to do this with rider setup

I'm not the best one to answer these questions, but I do know that adjusting the shock preload is equivalent to adjusting the sag. More preload = less sag. The preload is how much the spring is pre- loaded. Springs get progressively stiffer the more they are compressed. By pre-compressing the spring more, it will be in the stiffer part of the stroke sooner. I like my shock preload at 20-25, with my forks at 50, whether i'm running 100 spring rates (SX) or 75 (mx)
More oil also makes the forks stiffer. I find that right around 25 feels nice, but that's just personal preference. Too much oil seems to make the front end wash out easier in mxs.

That is a great guide Shadow but really confusing ..What Im trying to do here is simplify everything by taking the adjustments of the mxsim setup menu and putting them in a diagram in ther propper spot and explaining in a very easy to understand way instead of a tech diagram ..That way you just look at the diagram then look at the explanation then apply the adjustment.

Part of that write up in the Gearing section is a bit misleading,
A higher gear ratio gives more torque, but a byproduct of the added torque is a lower top speed in that gear.
While this is correct.... It is worded poorly for those whom are more "gear head" driven like myself.
The correct wording should say...
A Low geared setup grants the engine more torque while at the same time sacrifices top speed.
A high geared setup grants the engine less torque but makes higher top speeds possible.
Examples of gearing setups.
Low Gearing example - front sprocket = 12 tooth or below Rear sprocket = 51 tooth or higher
High Gearing Example - Front Sprocket = 13 Tooth or Higher Rear Sprocket = 50 tooth or below
Sorry... all the ratio mumbo-jumbo is a bit confusing.
